Vision Care Plans and Your Medical Insurance

There are two types of insurance that will help pay for your eye health services and products. You may have both types: (1) Vision Plan, (2) Medical Insurance.

  • Vision plans cover ONLY routine vision wellness exams and may include eyeglasses, sunglasses and contact lenses. We participate with some vision plans. For vision plans that we are not participating with; we can provide any patient with a receipt for payable services paid to submit reimbursement through a vision plan.
  • Medical insurance must be submitted for any medical diagnosis, treatment and follow-up.
  • Some of the tests we perform to diagnose and treat patients may not be covered by your insurance or may be subject to copayments, co-insurance and deductibles.

Medical Insurance

If you are covered under a managed care contract (Geisinger Health Plan PEBTF or REHP) please be sure to contact your family physician to obtain a referral prior to your appointment. We are not able to submit a claim to your insurance company without a referral.

Refraction Charge: Refraction is the process of determining your best-corrected vision. It is an essential part of an eye examination and is necessary to write a prescription for glasses. Eye glasses prescriptions are valid for 2 years. Our fee for refraction is $30.00 and will be collected at the time of service unless we know that your plan covers the refraction charge.

Contact Lens: All contact lens patients are required to have a complete eye exam every 1-2 years. A contact lens evaluation is necessary to write a valid contact lens prescription or to order contacts. Contact lens evaluations or fittings are an additional fee and will be collected at the time of service.

People can be born with astigmatism — in fact, most people probably are born with some degree of astigmatism — and they may have it along with other refractive errors: nearsightedness (myopia) or farsightedness (hyperopia).
